Dressing for the short rains: the pieces Kigali is choosing this season

As the September to December rains return, customer demand is shifting towards lighter layers, quick-drying fabrics and practical footwear.

With the return of the short rainy season, Buntu has seen a clear change in what customers are searching for and buying. Demand for heavier fabrics has eased, while interest in lightweight outerwear, fast-drying materials and weather-ready footwear has grown steadily since the start of September.

"Customers are adapting their wardrobes to the season," says a Buntu spokesperson. "They still want to look put together for work and for the weekend, but they are choosing pieces that can handle a sudden downpour and still look presentable an hour later. We have adjusted the assortment to reflect that."

Lightweight outerwear leads the season

Packable, water-resistant jackets are among the most viewed products in the shop this month. Customers are favouring neutral and darker tones such as navy, olive and stone, which are practical in wet conditions and easy to wear over office clothing. Lighter styles that fold into a bag have performed particularly well, reflecting the unpredictable pattern of the season.

Fabrics chosen for comfort and drying time

Linen blends, lightweight cottons and technical fabrics are seeing strong interest. These materials dry quickly and remain comfortable in humid conditions, which makes them a practical choice for customers moving between home, office and public transport during the day.

Footwear adapts to the weather

The biggest change is in footwear. Customers are moving towards rubber soles, wipe-clean materials and sandals with better grip, while interest in leather-soled shoes has dipped for the season. Buntu has expanded its selection in these categories accordingly.

Colour remains part of the picture

Practical choices have not removed colour from the season. Printed scarves, bags and umbrellas continue to sell well, giving customers a way to add pattern and brightness to outfits built around more weather-ready basics.

Buntu will continue to update its rainy season selection through to the end of the year.
